Nintendo isn’t ready to put its dying Wii U console to sleep

Following reports that Nintendo is cutting the production of its Wii U console by the end of this week, the Japanese gaming titan is now denying the rumor and claims it “is not true.”

Eurogamer was first to suggest the end of the Wii successor after “multiple sources” had “confirmed” the rumor. However, according to Kotaku and Japanese publication IT Media, this isn’t the case after all.

A spokesperson for Nintendo told IT Media that, “[t]here is no change to [their] continuing [Wii U] production.” While the company’s rep said he didn’t have all the details of the Eurogamer article, he was adamant that the report “was not true.”

“Even though the Nintendo Switch is slated to go on sale, [Wii U] production is scheduled to continue,” he added.

Reports about phasing out the Wii U began surfacing earlier in March. Japanese outlet Nikkei published a piece suggesting that Nintendo will cease production of the Wii U to make way for its new Switch console, but the legendary game-maker denied the rumors almost immediately.

Unlike its Wii predecessor, Nintendo has consistently struggled to make the Wii U attractive to consumers. While the gaming titan plans to keep the Wii U in its lineup for now, don’t be too surprised if it eventually drops it once its new Switch console picks up more momentum.
