Next year’s iPhone could go completely wireless as Apple experiments with “new way of charging”

A Wall Street Journal report claims that Apple is already working on a major iPhone revamp, due next year. It is said to be experimenting with a number of changes including a “new way of charging” the device.

Despite the rumors going around, we are still kept in the dark with the official changes in the next generation iPhone, expected to be released on September. Regardless, The Journal said that the Cupertino company is already prepping for next year’s iteration, which is expected to have a major revamp in terms of features.

“People briefed on Apple’s plans said the company is planning a major iPhone revamp then, with one person saying the company has been experimenting with features such as a new way of charging the phone.”

Details of the new charging mechanism have yet to be revealed, but it is possible that the company is considering using a wireless charging technology that would eliminate the need to use traditional charging cables. This is fitting considering all the wireless features coming in iOS5, which, if true, could truly make the iPhone a completely cable-free device.

Today’s report from WSJ also reiterates earlier claims of a smaller, less expensive iPhone, noting that the form factor in testing is reported to have an edge-to-edge screen.
