Netflix updates Android app with brand new player, bigger volume button, support for 4.2 Jelly Bean

Netflix updates Android app with brand new player, bigger volume button, support for 4.2 Jelly Bean

Netflix on Tuesday released a new version of its native Android app, adding support for the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system as well as a few new features. You can download the latest version now from the official Google Play Store.

The biggest addition is a brand new player for the app, although Netflix didn’t exactly elaborate what’s so great about it (save for some UI tweaks):

There’s a noticeably larger volume button (should be great for all those struggling to hit it on their touchscreens), and scrubbing has been made easier for new screen stills. Netflix, as always, notes that it has squashed stability and playback bugs, but it wouldn’t detail what exactly has been addressed.

Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) users should be excited to learn that Netflix has added support for the latest and greatest release of the mobile operating system. Although only 0.8 percent of Android users are on it (as of December 3), this number is expected to grow rather quickly, assuming Google can get the Nexus 4 into the hands of eager customers.

In fact, although most Android apps should work just fine on the second release of Jelly Bean, clearly some will require some tweaking to ensure everything works as expected. Other app developers likely will want to put their own apps through its paces on Android 4.2 before flipping the support switch.

Here is the official Netflix for Android version 2.1.1 changelog:

  • A brand new player with many added features to help you enjoy great movies and TV shows.
  • Large volume button.
  • Easy scrubbing with new screen stills.
  • Added support for Android v4.2.
  • Improved stability and playback bug fixes.
