Netflix picks up an Oscar nomination for The Square, a documentary on the Egyptian Revolution

After winning three Emmys last year and a Golden Globe earlier this month, Netflix has received further recognition from the TV and film industry with its first ever Oscar nomination.

The Square, an observational documentary focusing on protestors in the Egyptian Revolution, has been shortlisted in the Documentary Feature category. It will premiere on Netflix tomorrow (January 17), but has already won accolades at the Sundance and New York film festivals.

To be considered for such as prestigious award is testament to the quality of Netflix’s original content. TV shows such as Orange is the New Black and House of Cards, the latter of which has won three Emmys and a Golden Globe, have proven that it can compete with established TV networks and studios.

To pick up its first Oscar, Netflix will need to beat its fellow nominees first: Dirty Wars, Cutie and the Boxer, The Act of Killing and 20 Feet from Stardom.
