Netflix launches its first Flixies awards, categories include ‘Best Bromance’ and ‘Best Hangover Cure’

Netflix launches its first Flixies awards, categories include ‘Best Bromance’ and ‘Best Hangover Cure’

Just two days after the 84th Academy Awards came to its conclusion in Los Angeles, Netflix has announced a brand new awards initiative of its own – the Flixies.

As you’d expect, the Flixies will honour all the top movies and TV shows on the streaming service, with both Netflix members and non-members able to cast their votes.

Voting is open now, and will run all the way through to Sunday March 10 (5pm PST), with categories including Best Tantrum Tamer (aimed at parents of troublesome young ‘uns), Best Hangover Cure, Best Bromance and Best Marathon TV Show. So yeah, not your typical entertainment categories you’ll no doubt agree.

Netflix says that the awards are designed to celebrate “the new viewing habits of today’s entertainment watchers,” in other words those who like to sit at home and stream hours of TV shows and movies, with Netflix suggesting categories it feels will resonate with the public.

While the Flixies are open to anyone regardless of whether they’re a member or not, it will only be available to those in the forty countries where Netflix is offered. The public are also being encouraged to vote as many times as they like.

The top three winners in each category will be revealed on Monday March 11 and, with more than one eye on future Flixies, participants are also being invited to suggest new viewing categories based on how they personally watch titles on Netflix.

As things stand, however, the full list of categories are: Best Guilty Pleasure,  Best Commute SHRTNR, Best Marathon TV Show, Best Hangover Cure, Best Bromance, Best PMS Drama and Best Tantrum Tamer.

Netflix claims more than 33 million members in forty countries, who watch one billion hours worth of TV shows and movies each month, including Netflix original series such as House of Cards which first aired earlier this month.
