Nest’s Revolv smart home hub will shut down completely on May 15

Nest’s Revolv smart home hub will shut down completely on May 15

Revolv is shutting down. The Google-owned (by way of Nest) smart home hub will no longer work as of May 15 — as in, it will actually be a useless pile of plastic.

Not only is the API shutting off, the actual app and hub will both be disabled. Here’s the letter to users, from the Revolv Website:

We’re shutting down Revolv.

Revolv was a great first step into the connected home. It wasn’t perfect, but we worked hard to make something we – and other smart people – could build on.

And it worked. In 2014, we were bought by Nest and the technology we made became an integral part of the Works with Nest platform. Now Works with Nest is turning into something more secure, more useful and just flat-out better than anything Revolv created.

So we’re pouring all our energy into Works with Nest and are incredibly excited about what we’re making. Unfortunately, that means we can’t allocate resources to Revolv anymore and we have to shut down the service. As of May 15, 2016, your Revolv hub and app will no longer work.

Thank you for your support and believing in us. We’re sad for the end of Revolv, but this isn’t the end of the connected home. This is the beginning.

Shortly after being acquired by Google, Nest purchased Revolv. At the time, that acquisition was believed to be specifically for the hub, which Nest lacked. Instead, Nest created a ‘Works with Nest’ platform to have add-on items run through its thermostat, which a Google spokesperson says “is a better solution” for the connected home.

Unfortunately, Revolv owners will be plain left in the lurch come May 15. Their data will be deleted, and the warranty will no longer apply (as if that mattered, really). The app itself won’t even open, says Revolv.
