Elon Musk speaks with press outside the West Wing after a White House luncheon on superintelligence on 29 September 2026.
Elon Musk said on Sunday that SpaceX’s artificial intelligence unit, SpaceXAI, will change its name to SpaceXSI.
The plan follows an order from US President Donald Trump directing federal agencies to drop the term “artificial intelligence.”
Musk confirmed the change in a reply on X, Reuters reported, after a user had asked him whether SpaceXAI could become SpaceXSI.
“Yes, we will make that change,” Musk wrote.
Earlier that morning, he had posted that there would be no more AI and that SI was better. He also described SpaceX as a superintelligence company.
However, Musk gave no date for the change, and at the time of the report, the SpaceXAI account on X still used the old name.
SpaceXAI did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment, and we have not confirmed when the new name will take effect.
The rename lines up with Trump’s executive order of September 29. It tells executive branch agencies to refer to AI as superintelligence, or SI, in official documents and to stop using the older terms.
The order also gives Trump’s science and technology adviser 60 days to propose a legal definition of superintelligence.
Until then, SI covers the same technology that US law already defines as AI, the IAPP noted.
On the same day, Musk was one of six tech leaders who signed the White House Accord on Super Intelligence.
The voluntary pledge asks companies building frontier models to set up internal controls and outside audits. Since then, Trump has also named the leaders of a new Super Intelligence Force.
If the change goes ahead, SpaceXSI will be the unit’s third name this year. SpaceX bought xAI in February, and the business adopted the SpaceXAI name and a new logo on July 6.
