While the Moto X isn’t exactly a mind-blowing device, the upcoming wooden-backed variants look (and feel) absolutely incredible.
But first, let’s get one thing straight: there’s nothing ground-breaking about using wood. This isn’t a technical feat; it’s all about aesthetic value.
Keeping that in mind, the natural feel of the wood in your hand is impressive — by comparison, it makes the iPhone feel cold and awkward to hold. Now, let’s take a look at these lovely things:
At the moment, Motorola won’t share if these devices will be sold at a premium — we would be surprised if they weren’t. The standard Moto X starts at $199. Motorola says the wooden devices will cary the same warranty as the standard Moto X.
The company is testing a variety of wood types, but says it will settle on 4 distinct styles. We played with an early version of the oak and rosewood styles today.
According to Motorola’s Senior VP of product management, Rob Osterloh, Motorola is “in the process of creating a wood back for the Moto X.” The wooden-backed version will be available in Q4 of this year.
