Mobile carrier Entel Chile is the latest to get a customized Opera Mini browser

Mobile carrier Entel Chile is the latest to get a customized Opera Mini browser

Opera is partnering with Entel Chile to bring a customized version of its Opera Mini browser to the operator’s mobile subscribers, the company announced today.

As you may know, Entel is Chile’s principal telecommunications company, and has over 10 million subscribers – out of a total population of 17 million.

Following the rollout, Entel’s clients will now be encouraged to discover Opera Mini’s benefits, such as its compression technology, which can save up to 90% off data costs. According to Entel Chile’s Deputy Manager of Development and Innovation, Maria Ines Herrero, this point is especially relevant in a country such as Chile:

“Chile has one of the largest mobile penetrations in Latin America but mobile broadband is still for the privileged few. We are proud to partner with Opera Mini to ensure our customers get value for money as they browse the mobile Internet to get to the information they need, because, for many Chileans, the mobile device is their gateway to the Internet.”

In practical terms, Entel Chile subscribers who are new to Opera Mini will be able to download its customized version by typing m.opera.com on their device’s existing web browser. As for existing users, they will get an automatic update. Once installed, they will be able to directly access Entel’s data plans and other services via Opera Mini’s Smart Page.

Opera’s mobile browser boasts more than 190 million users worldwide, and is expanding its reach through mobile operators around the world. “Opera’s partnership with Entel Chile is part of Opera’s larger agreement with Vodafone, which extends to other markets where Vodafone has partnerships,” the company explains.

As we reported last September, it also closed a similar agreement with Mexican carrier Telcel, owned by America Movil, another Vodafone partner. Earlier this week, the company also unveiled a partnership with TIM in Brazil to offer a customized version of its App Store.
