If you were getting excited about playing Minecraft in virtual reality, you’re going to have to wait a bit longer. The game’s creator Markus Persson just revealed on Twitter that he has canceled any possible deal for an Oculus Rift version now that Facebook has announced plans to acquire Oculus VR.

Update: Persson has shared his thoughts at length on his blog:

I definitely want to be a part of VR, but I will not work with Facebook. Their motives are too unclear and shifting, and they haven’t historically been a stable platform. There’s nothing about their history that makes me trust them, and that makes them seem creepy to me.

And I did not chip in ten grand to seed a first investment round to build value for a Facebook acquisition.

Hear that noise? It’s the sound of millions of 14-year-olds sighing in disappointment. As a consolation, you can, however, still play this modded version for Oculus – Minecrift.

Persson’s about-face should come as a sobering consequence to the Oculus team. After a demo of an Oculus Rift prototype back in 2012, he said on Twitter he was “100% impressed” with it and planned to develop for the device.

Oculus VR’s new CTO John Carmack, formerly of Id Software infamy, gave Persson a small amount of credit late last year for inspiring him to make the decision to leave Id and go full-time with Oculus.
