Microsoft Lync-Skype video calling and Lync Android app demoed, arriving ‘later this year’

Microsoft Lync-Skype video calling and Lync Android app demoed, arriving ‘later this year’

Microsoft is today demonstrating how Lync and Skype users will soon be able to make video calls between the two platforms.

Gurdeep Singh Pall, Corporate Vice President for Lync and Skype Engineering, demoed the service on stage at Microsoft’s second annual Lync conference in Las Vegas. Clearly, it will help business users and their customers to be able to seamlessly connect voice and video calls between Microsoft’s two core VoIP platforms. Voice calling between Skype and Lync has actually been available since May last year.

However, this was just a demo and the feature isn’t yet ready for the prime time. A spokesperson for Microsoft told TNW that it wouldn’t be widely available until “later this year”. In addition to showing off Lync-Skype video calling, Microsoft also took the opportunity to demo the first Lync app for Android, which is set for release “this summer”.
