Microsoft’s acquisition of Skype, announced back in May, still isn’t complete but today it passed another hurdle as EU officials cleared it for take-off.
After the U.S. Federal Trade Commission recently approved the $8.5 Billion deal, European Union Competition Commission today gave their blessing, as Forbes reports. While that doesn’t quite mean the deal is wrapped up, it’s another milestone along the way to the household name of the VoIP industry becoming part of the Redmond tech giant.
The Commission had been investigating the deal’s potential impact on other players in the field, but found that the only overlap between Microsoft and Skype’s existing operations was in the realm of video messaging. The authority, as reported by Reuters, said:
“…the Commission considers that there are no competition concerns in this growing market where numerous players, including Google, are present,”
With US and European authorities now happy with the deal, it appears that it should be completed soon.
