Microsoft has finally taken the wraps of the launch date for its coming flight simulator, dubbed ‘Flight.’ The game should arrive on February 29th, a date that is in line with expectations.
According to the Microsoft update that made the launch date publicly known, interest in the game’s beta has been high: “There was an overwhelming demand for access to the ‘Microsoft Flight’ beta and the number of requests was far more than what we initially planned for. We received amazing feedback from the beta participants and it’s great to see this level of excitement from fans as we move toward the release of Microsoft Flight.”
While TNW did not participate in the beta, it did show footage of the game to a friend of the blog who is very acquainted with the larger flight simulator world. His view was that the game would appeal to casual gamers, but those who have invested time and money into the current market leader, Flight Simulator X, are unlikely to switch over.
At launch, there will be an expansion pack made available for Flight for 1600 Microsoft points, $20. The game itself is free to download and play. Microsoft is betting that users enjoy it enough to purchase add-ons. This sort of ‘freemium’ gaming monetization model has been growing in popularity, as titles such as League of Legends become household names and runaway financial successes.
TNW will post a short review of the game on its launch day. Stay tuned.
