MeeGo still kicking despite cold shoulder from Nokia

According to Reuters, with Nokia moving toward Microsoft software, Linux-based Meego is starting to see interest from mobile industry rivals such as LG.

“It’s opening opportunities for the others to come in. Discussions are taking place. You’ll see things coming out this year, pretty soon,” Valtteri Halla, a member of technical steering group of MeeGo, told a developer conference on Friday. Halla went on to explain that LG Electronics has joined a working group to develop a handset version of the software, alongside companies like ZTE and China Mobile.

MeeGo is an open-source operating system that was created last year by the merger of Nokia and Intel’s Linux-based platforms. Nokia switched gears in February when it said it would focus on Microsoft software instead. MeeGo is a recent addition to an already crowded market for mobile operating systems, led by Google’s Android.

Even though it has moved away from the MeeGo project, Nokia has promised to roll out its first and last device running the operating system later this year.

While this new development is promising, MeeGo still has a huge uphill climb ahead of itself if it is to make any headway in today’s mobile OS landscape.
