May the birds be with you: Angry Birds Star Wars is here

May the birds be with you: Angry Birds Star Wars is here

I’ve got a pretty high threshold, but this is approaching geek overload. Rovio has released its Star Wars-themed version of Angry Birds on the App Store and Google Play.

“It’s a banner day for us,” Peter Vesterbacka, CMO of Rovio Entertainment, said in a statement. “This is our best Angry Birds game yet, and we’re excited for our fans to finally meet Luke, Leia, and the rest of the gang!

New game mechanics include lightsabers, blasters and the force. The game has more than 80 levels, including locations like Tatooine and the “Pig Star”. And, of course, the game is also tied in with a merchandise campaign that includes apparel and plush toys.

Rovio teased the upcoming game back in October. To celebrate the launch, it held a Google+ Hangout with Lucasfilm executives late Wednesday (Pacific time) to offer a behind-the-scenes look at the game.

With Disney’s recent purchase of Lucasfilm, maybe we’ll be seeing more of these tie-ins. Anyone up for a Yoda Cut the Rope? Or, drawing from one of Disney’s own franchises, how about: “Where’s My Father?”

Rovio released its Bad Piggies game in September and watched it shoot to the top of the App Store in just three hours. The company’s really milking the Angry Birds franchise – a Bad Piggies-themed cookbook should bring home the bacon and an upcoming Angry Birds debit card could turn out to be a golden goose.
