After legendary video game director Hideo Kojima parted ways with developer Konami, it was clear to fans that their beloved Metal Gear franchise would never be the same. But no one could have predicted just how different the next game in the series would be.
The trailer for Metal Gear Survive, which Konami released today at Gamescom, shows that the upcoming title represents a major departure from the single-player stealth gameplay in previous releases. Instead, it’s a four-player co-op affair that follows on from Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes.
As IGN notes, Survive sees a group of soldiers from Militaires Sans Frontières transported through wormholes into some sort of alternate universe that’s riddled with horned zombies who are out for blood.
It isn’t clear how the story will pan out, and whether it will feature Snake at all. Konami European president Tomotada Tashiro said:
Metal Gear Survive will offer a fresh take on the series’ famed stealth elements, but within a unique co-op setting that is designed for a truly engrossing multiplayer experience.
Hopefully we’ll know more when the company shares more details after Gamescom.
Metal Gear Survive will launch in 2017 on Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
