Just hours after launching, Facebook’s Web-based Messenger is down (Update: It’s back now)

Update: Messenger.com appears to be returning to normal now, after a four-hour outage. A Facebook spokesperson said, “Messaging from Messenger.com was temporarily unavailable but has since been restored.

Facebook launched its standalone Web-based Messenger service only a few hours ago, and it’s already down.

The instant messaging service has been unavailable for about four hours now. Most reports of the outage are coming from users in the EU, North America and New Zealand, as Messenger.com is English-only at present.

The site currently returns this error when users visit the homepage or attempt to log in. It

FB Messenger down

Only the Web-based client is affected at this time; Messenger is up and running on Facebook.com and its mobile apps.

The site seems to have interrupted service at the moment. Some users may still be able to access it via messenger.com/login.
