iOS 7 adoption hits 80% according to Apple’s App Store usage numbers, iOS 6 slips to 17%

Apple today updated its iOS adoption numbers, as measured by usage of its App Store and presented on the support page for developers. iOS 7 has now hit the 80 percent mark while iOS 6 has slipped to 17 percent.

Apple first reported iOS numbers based on App Store usage on December 1, 2013, when 74 percent of users were on iOS 7, 22 percent were on iOS 6, and 4 percent were on earlier versions. At the end of December, those figures were updated to 78 percent, 18 percent, and 4 percent, respectively. Only 3 percent of iOS users are now on iOS 5 or below.

Update: On its Q1 2014 earnings call today, Apple said the 80 percent figure was for compatible devices, not all iOS devices released to date. This shouldn’t surprise anyone given that Apple makes sure apps on the App Store aren’t compatible with older devices.
