Another year, another big milestone for Instagram. The platform today announced it has reached 400 million monthly active users.
That’s up from 300 million users last December; that it was able to add 100 million users in less than a year is a huge testament to its popularity and continued growth, especially considering it first launched less than five years ago.
In its announcement post, the company highlighted its global spread with over 75 percent of its users living outside of the US. It also indicated that most its new users come from Europe and Asia. The specific countries with the most new Instagrammers were Brazil, Japan and Indonesia.
The milestone is also a showcase of Facebook’s dominance over social media platforms. Over 1 billion people used that social network in a single 24 hour period for the first time in August (out of a total 1.31B users), 700 million users are on Facebook Messenger monthly, while Facebook-owned WhatsApp hit 800 million monthly-active users in April.
