Along with the many fun and amusing groups to be found on Facebook there are a number which aim to group together like minded people that often support schools of thought that are frankly, disturbing.
One of those schools of thought belong to Holocaust deniers, and one prominent figure, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban (blog/twitter) has strived over the last year to have them removed.
Brian Cuban, the entrepreneurs brother and attorney, is representing the cause publicly and doing what he can to convince Facebook to have the groups removed.
Faceboook have said that they agree the groups are offensive and questionable, yet they are still unsure as to whether simply discussing the mater is enough cause to have them removed.
Facebook spokesman, Barry Schnitt told CNN;
“It’s a difficult decision to make. Just being offensive or objectionable doesn’t get it taken off Facebook. We want it [the site] to be a place where people can discuss all kinds of ideas, including controversial ones.”
The Jewish Internet Defense Force, did manage to remove a Facebook page for the group “Israel Is Not A Country! Delist It From Facebook As A Country,”, yet th holocaust issue appears to still leave the company undecided.
Having visited the site myself, I – without any hesitation – believe they should be removed. Although the groups have few members and little real activity, some of the titles and member profile photos are sickening to say the least.
