Hijab, breastfeeding and zombie emoji set to be included in Unicode 10

Hijab, breastfeeding and zombie emoji set to be included in Unicode 10

The Unicode Consortium has announced that it’s approved 51 new emoji for its upcoming Unicode 10 release that’s set to be published in mid-2017 — and they include everything from a vampire to a nude “person in a steamy room.”

It’s clear that making emoji more representative of the diverse community that uses them has been the main priority for the latest update as it’s set to include a breastfeeding mother, a woman wearing a hijab and a heavily bearded man.

We have to say, the hijab emoji looks remarkably similar to the one that was submitted to the Consortium back in September by a 15-year-old teenage girl from Saudi Arabia requesting a symbol that represents Muslim women like herself.

Fortunately for the foodies amongst us, a plethora of new food-related items have made their way onto the list, such as a pretzel, a sandwich, a cup with a straw, tinned ingredients, broccoli, a pie, a bowl of soup and a coconut.

You can find the full list of the 51 new emoji that have been approved to be included Unicode 10 below:

  • Sled
  • Flying saucer
  • ‘I love you’ hand sign
