Google acquired Boston-based airfare software company ITA in April 2010 for $700m, and subsequently launched its first ITA travel product in September last year…Google Flight search.
Whilst the feature has been US-centric in its first nine months, the search giant is rolling the product out to Canada too. From today, you can book flights that originate in Canadian airports using Google’s flight search tool, with prices in Canadian dollars.
With the tool, you can search for flights with the results loading instantly as you type. And you can also discover places to travel to through the on-screen map, as well as view ticket prices for destinations. You can filter by price, airline, or flight duration.
Oh, and Canada being Canada, the Flight Search tool is also available in French.
Google laid out its product vision in this blog post when it announced the acquisition in July 2010:
“[W]e think there is room for more competition and greater innovation. Google has already come up with new ways to organize hard-to-find information like images, newspaper archives, scholarly papers, books and geographic data.
Once we’ve completed our acquisition of ITA, we’ll work on creating new flight search tools that will make it easier for you to search for flights, compare flight options and prices and get you quickly to a site where you can buy your ticket.”
Indeed, we’ll likely start to see Flight Search rolled out to include other markets in the not-too-distant future. At the time of writing, it can be used to book travel to over 500 international destinations.
“We’re working hard on expanding our global coverage and adding more routes and airline partners in the future,” says Gianni Marostica, Google Commercial Director, Travel. “Our goal is to make booking travel as fast and enjoyable as possible.”
