Google to let Glass owners swap out for a prescription-compatible version, invite three friends to buy Glass too

Google to let Glass owners swap out for a prescription-compatible version, invite three friends to buy Glass too

Google today announced a program that will let Google Glass owners swap out their device for a new, updated version. The hardware upgrade will allow Glass to work with future lines of shades and prescription frames, according to Google, and will also include a mono earbud.

The company is also looking to expand its Explorer Program. Over “the next few weeks,” all Explorers will have the opportunity to invite three friends to join the program, giving the option to buy Glass online have it shipped to them.

Google says the swapping option is part of its strategy to keep improving Glass. The company already offers monthly software updates for the device, but now it also wants to thank its testers with a hardware upgrade.

“We’re counting on you to get Glass to the people you think will make great Explorers,” Google says. “More Explorers means more feedback, and more feedback means better Glass.”

According to a FAQ on the company’s site, the one-time optional swap out is only for Explorers who purchased their device before October 28, 2013. Presumably, those who get their device today or later will get the new version anyway.

It’s also worth noting that the swapping is entirely optional: “You are entitled to keep your original device subject to the warranty terms you agreed to at the time of your original purchase. Your warranty will expire 1 year after your original purchase date.” In other words, we would recommend swapping.

The page also notes Explorers will have 60 days to register for their exchange, which will occur sometime in November. Signing up in advance is not required: Google will be sending out invitations next month.
