From Maps to Flight Search, Google is pretty much an essential part of modern travel. Now it seems the company may be working on an app that pull its various travel tools together.
Dutch publication Android World reports that users in Google’s Local Guides program are testing a new app simply called Google Trips. It’s basically an amalgam of travel guides for various locations.
It can pull in trip information from your emails -presumably from things such as flight itineraries and hotel reservations – and you can download the guides onto storage should you not have data connectivity.
Each guide is divided into numerous sections. For instance, a ‘Getting around’ section provides information such as how to leave the airport once your flight lands, public transport, and local taxi, ridesharing and rental options.
Meanwhile ‘Things to do’ shows popular locations, tailored suggestions, indoor and outdoor events. There’s also a selection of “farther away” places should you be willing to travel a bit more, as well as an alphabetical list of highlights.
Of course, they include ratings from Google Maps as well.
Other sections in the images include ‘Reservations,’ ‘Food & Drink,’ and ‘Need to know.’ Android World also says that the app heavily incorporates suggestions from locals – hence why it’s being testing by Local Guides.
The illustrations in the leaked images match Google’s typical art style, and it’s worth noting Google updated its search app with a Destinations feature just last month; Trips appears to be an extension of the concept.
The supposed app is only available to Level 2 Local Guides; users in that tier can “get early access to new Google products and features.”
We contacted Google to verify the app’s authenticity, and got a fairly vague response back:
We love to travel and are hard at work dreaming up new ways to make the travel experience hassle-free. While we do that, sit tight and keep on using our amazing tools like Google Flights, Hotel Search and Destinations on Google to plan your next adventure.
Google doesn’t tend to comment on rumors, but it seems it’s at least working on something travel-related. Whether or not it ends up being Google Trips, only time will tell.
