Google announced Google Offers, a service that allows for special offers and deals to be delivered to your inbox, Thursday morning at an event in NYC.
Google Offers will launch in Portland to start then spread outwards to other cities. It integrates with Google’s newly announced Google Wallet service although Google says that the service is open to other partners.
Once you sign up for offers, deals will be delivered to your email inbox as well as to mobile phones using location information. This means that you may be shopping at a grocery store, choose an item in your shopping list using Google Wallet and be informed that there is a deal on that item in a popup notification.
Google Offers is clearly aimed at the Groupon market, with offers being pushed out to users when checking in to a local business or in the area surrounding a user’s location. Google will no doubt be leveraging their ‘Gcard’ prepaid card and Google Wallet to drive adoption and use of the Google Offers service.
During the event, Google demonstrated a purchase made with the new Google Wallet. During the transaction the Google Wallet automatically located and applied a Google Offers coupon to the transaction. The coupon was recognized by the POS system and applied to the purchase.
Google also demonstrated how you might walk up to a store display and tap an area to retrieve a coupon or discount for later use.
Google will begin rolling out the Google Offers service in New York and the San Francisco Bay Area in the near future. Portland area businesses can indicate that they’re interested in joining the Google Offers program here. If you’re a business owner that is not in the Portland area you can indicate that you’re interested in being notified about the arrival of the service here.
If you’re interested in signing up for the Google Offers service to begin receiving deals when they come to your area you can sign up here.
