Google introduces ‘Fiber Phone,’ a $10/mo home phone service for all Fiber cities

Google introduces ‘Fiber Phone,’ a $10/mo home phone service for all Fiber cities

A couple months back, we reported that Google was testing a home phone service called ‘Fiber Phone’ — a service it could bundle with TV and internet to create that ever-so-profitable “triple play” that telecoms have been profiting from for years.

Today, Google announced that it was officially rolling out the service in select areas for just $10 a month, and that it would include many of the same features of its Web calling platform, Google Voice.

For $10/month, you get unlimited local and nationwide calling, and the same affordable rates as Google Voice for international calls. You can keep your old phone number, or pick a new one. You can use call waiting, caller ID, and 911 services just as easily as you could before. Fiber Phone can also make it easier to access your voicemail—the service will transcribe your voice messages for you and then send as a text or email.

Currently, Fiber Phone is only available to customers who live in Google Fiber cities, that is, those with Google Fiber internet already installed.

The installation kit includes all you need to set up your existing home phone hardware with the service, if it’s available in the area.
