Google Transparency Report shows government requests for user data have doubled in three years

Google has released details of requests it receives from governments for information on its users, noting that the number has more than doubled since 2010.

In the update to its Transparency Report, now on its eighth iteration, Google says that part of that increase is down to the growth of its services (more users = more requests) but that government issued requests had also increased by more than 100 percent – and that’s only the ones it’s allowed to reveal details about.

Topping the list for government requests for user data is the US, as is usual for these reports, followed by India, Germany, France and the UK making up the rest of the top five spots.

As well as reporting on the usual metrics like the number and location of requests, Google has also added additional information about the legal process for US criminal requests and now breaks out emergency disclosures, wiretap orders, pen register orders and other types of court order.
