Google Apps hit with partial service outage: Gmail, Google Drive, Docs, and Admin control panel affected (Update: Resolved)

Google Apps is currently experiencing partial service outage affecting multiple services including Gmail, Google Drive, and the Admin control panel. Google is attempting to resolve the issue as fast as possible but has not disclosed a cause as of yet.

Some users trying to access these services are getting the following message:

Sorry, there seems to be a problem. The service you’re looking for is temporarily unavailable. We’re working hard to restore your access as soon as possible. Please try again in a few hours. Thanks for your patience.

According to the Apps Status Dashboard, the problems first started with the Admin control panel and API at 8:20 AM. Google Mail followed at 8:58 AM and then Google Drive joined the fray at 9:01 AM. 10 minutes later, at 9:11 AM, Google Documents was hit, as were Google Spreasheets and Google Presentations at 9:12 AM.

These are of course the times that Google’s systems automatically picked up problems or engineers confirmed issues. You may have been experiencing problems sooner and thus for longer. Although not explicitly mentioned above, Google Chat is also not working for many.

Curiously, as we were looking into this story, we stumbled upon one of our own from last year. Gmail was coincidentally down on the exact same day in 2012.

We have contacted Google about the issues. We will update this story if we hear back.

Update at 10:25 AM EST: “We are currently investigating issues with Gmail, Drive and Docs as well as the Google Apps Control Panel,” a Google spokesperson told TNW. “We are providing more information and frequent updates through our Google Apps Status Dashboard, which you can find here. We will post the root cause of the issue there when our teams have completed their investigation. In the meantime, for everyone who is affected, we apologize – we know you count on Google to work for you and we’re working hard to restore normal operation for you.”

Update at 11:00 AM EST: All services except for the Admin control panel seem to be operational again.

For the services with an orange dot, the outage time totaled just over an hour and a half.

Update at 11:20 AM EST: The Admin control panel is working again now too. It was down for just under three hours.
