Google and Star Wars partner to create a virtual reality tie-in to ‘The Force Awakens’

The Star Wars marketing machine is on full blast, and the latest promotion for the upcoming movie has arrived in the form of ‘Jakku Spy’ – the first official VR Star Wars experience.

‘Jakku Spy’ is available via the official Star Wars app, and it was developed by Lucasfilm’s ILMxLAB studio in conjunction with Google and Verizon, with oversight from director JJ Abrams.

As part of the story, you receive a series of messages leading up to the December 18 release date. Verizon customers can also get one of four cardboard headsets, designed after the looks of R2D2, BB-8, Kylo Ren and a Stormtrooper.

It seems like this isn’t the last to expect in terms of Star Wars related VR either, with a Lucasfilm executive suggesting it’s just the ‘first step’ in a virtual reality Star Wars universe.
