Google Analytics gets two-step upgrade to Universal Analytics, will move everyone over ‘in the coming months’

Google today launched Universal Analytics Upgrade, a two-step process to upgrade your existing properties from Classic Analytics to Universal Analytics. The company wants to enable the new version for all Analytics properties so that it can roll out all updates and new features on top of the Universal Analytics infrastructure.

Google won’t be renaming Google Analytics to Universal Analytics: it’s just the company’s way of defining a new version of the service, which first arrived as a private beta in October 2012. Google says Universal Analytics helps firms make sense of all the data coming in from consumers using multiple devices, mobile apps, as well as online and offline interactions.

In any case, here are the two steps you can now take to upgrade:

  1. Transfer your property from Classic to Universal Analytics. Google is beginning to offer a new tool in the admin section of all accounts to transfer your properties to Universal Analytics. In the coming weeks, look for it in your property settings.
  2. Re-tag with a version of the Universal Analytics tracking code. Upgrade your tracking code with the analytics.js JavaScript library on your websites, and Android or iOS SDK v2.x or higher for your mobile apps.

To make sure all properties upgrade, Google says Classic Analytics properties that don’t initiate a transfer will be auto-transferred to Universal Analytics “in the coming months.” We’ll let you know when an exact timeframe is made known.

Until then, you can choose to stick with the old or switch to the new. We would recommend at least trying Universal Analatyics, since you won’t have a choice very soon.
