Google Maps adds new hi-res imagery in more than 60 regions following Bing’s aerial maps roll out

Following the recent completion of Microsoft’s Global Ortho (GO) project for Bing Maps, Google is now announcing updated, high resolution satellite imagery for more than 60 regions and updated aerial imagery for more than 20 locations. As you can see below, these areas include the Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and Abraj Al Bait, one of the world largest clock towers.

In addition, Google is also bringing in new, 45° imagery to 23 US cities and 7 international locations. Once of those international locations includes this view of Bordeaux, France.

Coverage-wise, especially if you count services like Street View, Google definitely has Bing Maps beat, but it’s noteworthy that Microsoft’s GO project brings in seamless aerial maps for nearly every inch of the continental US. This means the competition is only growing for Google, which is already facing pressure from the likes of OpenStreetMap, Apple and Nokia.
