Gmail catches up to other Google products with 1 billion monthly users

Gmail may be one of Google’s oldest products, but it just hit a huge milestone: one billion monthly active users.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai made the announcement during an earnings call for parent company Alphabet – which just became the most valuable company in the world. Gmail is joining Search, Chrome, Play, YouTube, Android and Maps in the one billion user club.

It might seem odd that Gmail – which is older than any of the other services mentioned above, other than search – took so long to hit that milestone, but it makes sense. While products like Search and YouTube have huge dominance over the alternatives, email is still a bit more, divided with competitors like Yahoo, Apple, Outlook and .edu or provider email addresses.

Google’s not the only one with big user number this  week. Facebook recently announced that 894 million – or 90 percent of its total users – access the service via mobile devices daily, and it’s already well past the billion mark on a monthly basis.
