There’s some interesting news coming out of the Facebook Developers blog. New features are being added to the Facebook “Like” button.
According to the blog we’ll get some more value from the Like button:
- Commenting for the iFrame version
- Publishing to connected users via the Graph API
- More robust analytics
We’ve seen the commenting features enabled over the past couple of weeks. We can only assume, then, that Facebook has been trying out the addition on select sites or to select users.
Since it’s all official now, we can dig in and see what it’s all about. Facebook is saying that Likes containing comments tend to get more traffic than those that stand alone. This makes sense, of course, as the idea of Like is to get a message across to those who are in your network.
Beyond the commenting, the analytics are a huge treat. While we’ve been able to track analytics on the button for quite a while, the new features are a nice bonus. With the new analytics, you’ll now be able to see which button type is most effective, as well as finding out where on Facebook a link gets clicked.
Facebook users get some greater privacy, as well. The new analytics will allow the links to send data, but only anonymous data that can be used to get a better understanding of your visitors’ behavior.
All in all, some pretty great additions to a service that’s already huge. We like announcements of this type.
