Foursquare’s Swarm is finally making your check-ins count with all-new Perks

Celebrating its 10 billionth check-in, Foursquare has updated its Swarm lifelogging app on Android and iOS with perks that you can redeem with all the coins you earn while using the service.

When you check-in at participating businesses’ locations or answer trivia questions about where you’ve been, Swarm will award you coins that will score you things like free drinks at a bar or coffee shop.

The company told The Verge that it will offer “tens of thousands” of Swarm Perks at launch, in collaboration with a range of businesses. However, it’s worth noting that these are only available in the US for now.

It’ll be interesting to see if this takes off. J Crowley, Foursquare’s head of product, said that these deals won’t see any money changing hands between the company and local businesses. But that seems like the next logical step – particularly if Swarm is already seeing increased usage as the company claims.
