Foursquare and Waze team up to raise awareness of hunger-relief charity

Foursquare and crowdsourced turn-by-turn navigation app Waze have teamed up to help raise awareness of hunger-relief charity Feeding America.

To help raise awareness over the Thanksgiving holiday about the 49 million people – including 17 million children – in the United States that face food insecurity, Waze will be featuring special map pins of local Feeding America food banks, that will feature one-click activation of the turn-by-turn directions to that location. Waze users that then drive to the food bank will then be able to check-in on Foursquare directly from within the Waze app, and will hopefully then share that check-in out to Twitter and Facebook to help raise awareness. Additionally, Waze has pledged to donate $1 for each of the first 2,000 check-ins at the food banks (i.e. $2,000).

Of course, when Waze/Foursquare users visit these food banks, dropping off extra food or cash donations would be a big help, and Tristan Walker, Foursquare’s Director of Business Development said in a press release, “Every donation has the ability to a make a difference for someone. It’s our hope that our users will take advantage of this great opportunity to not only help feed the hungry, but to raise the consciousness of this issue to all of the people in their social networks.”
