Flipboard finally gets dedicated Android tablet support, giving Google Currents a run for its money

Flipboard finally gets dedicated Android tablet support, giving Google Currents a run for its money

After debuting its iBookstore-powered “Books” section and adding support for the iPad mini, Flipboard’s magazine-inspired reading app has finally landed on Android tablets, with special optimization for Samsung devices.

Flipboard had previously only been available on Android phones and seven-inch Android devices like the Kindle Fire, NOOK and Nexus 7. Now, Android tablets users, particularly owners of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, Galaxy Tab series and Nexus 10, will be able to take advantage of the new release.

As for why Flipboard is finally embracing Android tablets, Head of International Development Eric Alexander explains that he sees the adoption of these tablets “growing quickly.” He goes on to detail that “more people buy Android tablets for themselves or others over the holidays, we wanted to make sure Flipboard is part of their tablet experience and deliver on a top request from our readers.”

Like you’d expect, Flipboard’s new app has “been optimized for a variety of screen sizes and aspect ratios,” but the company appears to have the closest relationship with Samsung, as the two apparently worked together on the app over the past year.

This release should leave quite an impact on Google’s Flipboard competitor, Currents, which recently received an update to let users scan stories by category, publication and breaking news. Try out the app for yourself via the link below. Users who had previously installed the Android phone app on their tablets should be able to update to the new version.
