Update: Facebook has been in touch to say the lack of the Ticker is in fact a bug and that it will return to business as usual soon.
Some Facebook users have awoken to find that they no longer have the activity Ticker present down the right-hand side of their profiles.
While no longer seeing that your friends are listening to terrible music is no big loss, the removal of the Ticker could more importantly herald the first steps to a more widespread distribution of the new look News Feed. Last we heard, Facebook was testing out the removal of the Ticker for some people, but we’ve had no official confirmation of when the new News Feed will roll out to all users and whether the Ticker will still play a part.
Then again, it could just be a glitch.
It seems other Facebook users stuck with the old design, as well as the new, have also woken up to find that their ticker had disappeared. Naturally, many of them took to Twitter to express their happiness or surprise. This isn’t the first time that the news Ticker has disappeared only to return later, but that was before the redesign was announced.
Facebook introduced the redesign in March for some users and has since been gradually rolling it out. The impetus behind it, according to Facebook, was to present stories in a more rich and engaging way, as well as to ensure a more consistent experience across different mobile and desktop platforms.
We’ve asked Facebook for official clarification and will let you know if we hear anything back.
