It’s the time of the year when Facebook stops to reflect on its most popular topics and trends for users around the world. And with 1.3 billion people using the platform, that’s quite some insight into the world’s most popular topics for 2014.
Topping the global chart is the World Cup, which generated more than 3 billion comments, likes and posts from over 350 million people. In second spot is the Ebola epidemic in West Africa, while the presidential elections in Brazil was in third spot with 48 million people having 674 million interactions about the topic.
In the UK, the top three were the Scottish Referendum, the Ice Bucket Challenge (number 5 on the global topic list) and the World Cup.
On a strictly US-level, the most talked about TV shows showed Game of Thrones, Orange is the New Black and The Walking Dead atop of the list, edging out The Big Bang Theory and Downton Abbey in fourth and fifth spot. The most talked about movies were Frozen, Guardians of the Galaxy and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
