Facebook to bring operator billing to mobile web apps

Facebook to bring operator billing to mobile web apps

Facebook CTO Brett Taylor took to the stage at Mobile World Congress this morning to announce new ways that the company is helping its users but also app developers interact better with Web apps.

Already stating that the company is backing a new standard for Web apps, Taylor also touted Facebook’s Pay Dialog mobile SDK, which will allow mobile operators to work with app developers to integrate operator billing into their apps.

Facebook has already partnered with AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica, T-Mobile USA, Verizon, Vodafone, KDDI, SOFTBANK MOBILE Corp, and will automatically make operator billing available on a user’s device as long as they have a device on one of the above carriers and developers have included the Pay Dialog call in their apps.

Facebook’s other announcements included the fact the company was backing the W3C Mobile Web Platform Core Community Group, a consortium of over 30 device manufacturers, carriers, and developers grouping together to standardize mobile browsers.

Meanwhile, Facebook is also launching Ringmark, a new mobile browser test suite. This is available from today and the W3C Mobile Web Platform Core Community Group will be able to build upon it. It’s designed to help developers understand which mobile browsers support the functionality their apps need.

This is just part of its plan to push forward its Open Graph, drawing users away from locked-down platforms like iOS and giving them the opportunity to download apps that run freely on the Web and operate on any platform.
