Facebook: More than 400 billion Open Graph actions have now been shared

Today ahead of its event at SXSW, Facebook’s platform team has shared a number of new stats, including that more than 400 billion Open Graph actions have been shared “back to Facebook” as of this month.

This 400 billion figure is a somewhat unusual metric, given how vague it is — Facebook defines its Open Graph actions as “the high-level interactions users can perform” in a Facebook-connected app. Examples of these actions include following, liking, listening to music, reading an article, watching a video, pinning an image on Pinterest, etc. Thus, the 400 billion actions stat is impressive, but unsurprising given the company’s 1+ billion users.

Moving on, Facebook says that “on average, people choose to share their app activity” with friends over 1 billion times daily. This voluntary sharing stat appears to include automatic, opted-in sharing from third-party apps.

Facebook has also shared that as of March 2013, “110 million songs, albums and radio stations have been played 40 billion times” via Facebook-integrated apps and “1.47 million books have been shared.”

These stats may be more compelling to developers working directly with Facebook’s platform than the average user, but they do reveal just how wide-reaching Facebook’s platform truly is.
