directgovStill a few days to Christmas and already the news is full of stories of travel misery as people try to visit family, pick up last-minute presents and get to work in adverse weather conditions.

To help stranded travellers, the UK government has launched its official iPhone Travel app, with up-to-the-minute advice on public transport and roads.

The free app enables users to let their phone select their current location to discover local travel problems, or use a selector-wheel to choose their region, transport type and delay type to help them plan their journeys.

Results are displayed in the form of coloured pins on Google maps, each of which can be selected individually for detailed information about the type of delay, incident description and severity.

The DirectGov app covers England, Scotland and Wales with source data provided by Transport Direct.
