Crowd-powered transit app Moovit debuts Lyft integration pilot program in select cities [Update: feature now available in all cities covered by Lyft]

The transit-planning app Moovit is teaming up with get-a-ride-in-a-stranger’s-car service Lyft to help users get where they need to go in a timely fashion.

ios-lyft-english 2The update available for iOS and Android adds the ability to request a Lyft pickup to Moovit’s planning a trip feature. The integration gives travelers an additional option when getting around. The Lyft integration pilot program starts in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Moovit CEO, Nir Erez says that new cities could come online soon based on what happens in the launch cities, “We want to start with select cities to be more focused and to measure the impact of the relationship. It’s an experimental process.”

If the Lyft integration proves successful, the feature will be expanded to the rest of the US and finally any countries that Lyft expands to and Moovit supports.

The Moovit app uses information from both transit agencies and passengers who travel with the app open. Considering that some transit authorities find it difficult to keep their vehicles running on time, Moovit’s crowd-sourced timetable could mean the difference between arriving on time and being the person that messes up your group dinner reservation.

Update: Moovit just informed TNW that it has decided to support Lyft integration in all cities that Lyft operates in.
