In the wake of aftershocks in Haiti following the already devastating effects of last week’s earthquake, London’s tech community is joining the global aid effort.
Crisis Camp London is part of the international Crisis Commons Project which brings together domain experts, developers, and first responders to improve technology and practice for humanitarian crisis management and disaster relief.
Crisis Camp is a series of BarCamp style events, the first of which is set to take place in the capital on Thursday 21st January (sign-up details here). People come together to work on projects based on their skills and interests with the aim of creating technological tools and resources for responders to use in mitigating disaster.
A number of Crisis Camps, focused on providing specific technical services including application development, mapping support and data acquisition, have already taken place across North America.
IRC chat is being used for ongoing communication between volunteers and the various Crisis Camp groups. A Google Group serves as the central mailing list and discussion forum. On Twitter, conversations are hashagged with #crisiscampldn.
