Coursera partners with 13 new institutions to pass 100 total, eclipses 5 million students and 500 courses too

Coursera today announced that 13 new institutions have joined its ranks, bringing the education startup’s total number of partners offering courses on its platform into the triple digits: 107. Furthermore, Coursera this month also surpassed the 5 million student mark and now offers more than 500 courses as well.

The new partners span the following 11 countries: China, Denmark, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, and the US. To celebrate the 100 institution milestone, Coursera unfortunately decided to release an infographic highlighting its growth:

We’re not big fans of infographics, but we’ll make an exception in this case. The part that jumps out at us the most is the instructor number: 731. Doing some basic math, that means each teacher instructs an average of over 7,204 students. On a course enrollment basis, the number jumps to over 26,128 per teacher. Of course, some courses are taught my more than one teacher, and many students take more than one course, but this gives you a rough idea of Coursera’s scale.

These ratios are only possible thanks to the Internet. The course videos have been viewed over 300 million times, totaling over 48 million hours of learning. Again, that happened in the span of just two years.

“It is remarkable that such a powerful network has developed just 18 months since the official launch of our company,” Coursera co-founder Daphne Koller said in a statement. “With so many countries, languages, and educational backgrounds represented, we are proud to be a part of a movement promoting lifelong education for everyone.”

The full list of partners is as follows: Copenhagen Business School (CBS), Eindhoven University of Technology, Koç University, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), IESE Business School, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), National Geographic Society, National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE), Saint Petersburg State University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Università Bocconi, University of Lausanne, and University of Manchester.
