comScore: Online video viewing in the UK grew by 42% in 6 months

Online data measurement company comScore has released the latest UK figures from its Video Metrix service, revealing that online video reached 34 million UK Internet users in January this year.

This represents 80% of the total UK Internet audience, and more than 8.4 billion videos were watched throughout the month, notching up 58.8 billion minutes of online views in January.

It’s worth noting that the UK’s online video audience didn’t get any bigger in the six months to January, however, but the number of videos viewed did increase, climbing by 28%. Furthermore, the amount of time users spent watching online video grew by 42% , indicating that viewers are becoming more engaged with video on the Web.

Google-owned sites, rather predictably, ranked as the most popular video destination – thanks in large to YouTube, which represented 99.5% of all Google’s video views – clocking up 30 million unique viewers in January this year.
