Video is very much where it’s at in the digital sphere, with the likes of Vine and Instagram serving the mobile masses well. And for those looking to collaborate on projects there’s Vyclone, while the recently-launched Cameo takes Vine and makes it long-form, with 2-minute skits consisting of (up to) 6-second clips.
Clipcam is now entering the busy video-app space with an iPhone app not too dissimilar to the aforementioned Cameo, but with a few subtle differences.
For starters, you don’t need to set up an account to use Clipcam, it’s good to go as soon as you launch. It’s all about making short videos consisting of multiple clips, which can be rearranged and reordered before sharing by SMS, iMessage, email, Facebook and more.
It’s a really nicely constructed app with a beautiful design that fits well with iOS 7. And while both Vine and Cameo restrict you to six second clips (though the latter works up to 2 minutes in total), Clipcam makes no such restriction, though whether that’s a good or bad thing is another issue altogether.
You simply tap the button in the middle to start recording, and tap it again to stop. You continue this until you’ve gathered all your clips, and then you can move them around into your preferred sequence.
It also features live filters which can be applied before sharing with friends, though a number of these require a $0.99 in-app purchase to unlock.
But the ease with which Clipcam lets you shoot and rearrange clips should see this gain some serious followers, and is certainly proof that the popularity of video-sharing is showing no signs of waning. That said, the collaborative video-creation element of Cameo is missing here, which is a shame.
