Hidden code in ChatGPT’s latest Android app suggests OpenAI is building a feature that would let users generate stickers and export them directly to WhatsApp. An APK teardown by Android Authority found references to an “Add to WhatsApp” option in the sharing menu. Instead of sending AI-generated images as regular pictures, ChatGPT would prepare them in WhatsApp’s sticker format before handing them off to the messaging app.

The workflow would replace a multi-step process. Today, creating a custom WhatsApp sticker from ChatGPT requires generating an image, removing its background, saving it locally, and importing it into a third-party sticker tool. The teardown suggests OpenAI is building the conversion directly into ChatGPT, turning a text prompt into a WhatsApp sticker in a few taps. Users could create personalised reaction stickers, memes, or illustrations from a single prompt.

The feature reflects how ChatGPT’s image generation has moved from novelty to daily utility. OpenAI just removed usage limits for free ChatGPT users, and image generation was already one of the most popular features after the viral Ghibli-style and action figure trends earlier this year. Making those images directly shareable inside the world’s most popular messaging app, WhatsApp has more than two billion users, would remove the friction that currently stops most people from turning AI images into stickers.

OpenAI has not announced the feature, and APK teardowns surface code that may never ship. But the integration makes strategic sense. ChatGPT is increasingly competing not just with other chatbots but with the creative tools people use daily. A native WhatsApp sticker pipeline would make ChatGPT harder to replace for the hundreds of millions of users who already generate images inside it. Whether it launches is uncertain. That OpenAI is building the plumbing is not.
