Bentley recorded a V8 in a studio, analysed it, and discovered that rhythm, not mechanical tone, is what makes the engine emotionally compelling. To test the theory, the team set up parabolic speakers with the V8 playing on one side and a live drummer on the other. Walking between the two revealed striking similarities in energy, cadence, and impact. Both contained subtle variations and imperfections that introduce what Bentley calls “a distinctly human quality.” The conclusion: if the emotional appeal of a V8 is rhythmic, an orchestra can replicate it.

The result is the “Bentley Dynamic Symphony,” a powertrain soundtrack for the upcoming electric Torcal SUV performed by musicians on drums, viola, and bass guitar. It is not synthetic engine noise or amplified motor whine. It is original music, composed to evoke the feelings of Bentley’s historic engines, from the supercharged cars of the 1930s to the 6¾-litre V8, without imitating any of them. The soundtrack responds to driver inputs, rising and falling with throttle and speed, just as a combustion engine would.

The Torcal is Bentley’s first production EV and its electric replacement for the Bentayga, the brand’s best-selling model. BMW hired Hans Zimmer to score the sound of its electric M cars. The AI-driven memory shortage has pushed component costs higher across every electronics category, and the Torcal will arrive in a market where EV prices are rising, not falling. Bentley has not disclosed pricing, but has said it will be comparable to the Bentayga, which starts above £150,000.

Most EV manufacturers have approached the sound problem by faking what they lost: synthetic V8 rumbles, spaceship whines, or amplified drivetrain hum. Chinese EV makers are competing on ambition, from flying cars to AI-native smartphones. Bentley is competing on craft. The bet is that a sound made by humans, played on real instruments, will feel different from one generated by software, even if neither of them is an engine. Whether a viola can make a two-tonne electric SUV feel like a 1930s Blower Bentley is a question only a test drive will answer.
