Automatic for the people: Customize your own news and event alerts with The New York Times on IFTTT

IFTTT, the startup that wants to automate the Internet, has bagged The New York Times as its latest big-name media brand, following its tie-up with ESPN for the Olympics last year.

Through the Times’ dedicated IFTTT channel, NYTimes.com users can customize the way they read the publication, and they can connect The New York Times with more than 60 other IFTTT channels, such as Evernote, Twitter, Pocket and Tumblr.

Powered by The Times’s API, the six Triggers for launch include a ‘new article in’ section, which ‘fires’ every time a new article is published in a pre-specified section of The New York Times, and a ‘new article from search’ option, which fires every time a new article is published that matches an exact search query stipulated by the user.

Also, the ‘new event in category’ fires every time an event is listed in a category specified by the user, but this is limited to the New York area for now.
