Apple holds its “Surprise and Shine” event on 9 September, the first product launch run by John Ternus, who became chief executive on 1 September as Tim Cook moved to executive chairman. Cook worked his last day in the role on 31 August.
It is the start of the biggest run of device releases in the company’s history, Mark Gurman reported for Bloomberg on Friday, spanning fresh form factors and new product areas across 2026, 2027 and beyond. TNW has not independently verified the multi-year roadmap, and Apple has confirmed only the event itself.
The engineer’s answer
Ternus joined Apple in 2001 on the product design team and ran hardware engineering from January 2021. He is, by background and temperament, the person you appoint when the answer is a better-built object.
Gurman’s framing is that Apple spent 15 years refining existing lines and building recurring services revenue, with few genuinely new categories beyond Watch and AirPods. The correction now arriving is a wave of new shapes: a foldable iPhone next week, a touch-screen MacBook later.
That is a coherent plan for a hardware company. It is also an answer to a question Apple was not being asked most loudly.
The software question got answered elsewhere
The pressure on Apple through 2025 and 2026 was about artificial intelligence, and specifically about an assistant that could not do what rivals’ could. That problem has been settled, though not in a way that flatters the engineering organisation.
Siri was rebuilt on a custom Google Gemini model and shipped as a standalone app, routing queries between on-device models, Private Cloud Compute and a 1.2-trillion-parameter system Apple did not build. The company also settled a $250m class action over AI features marketed before they were ready.
Competitors did not wait. The Pixel 11 put Gemini into the operating system weeks before Siri got comparable models, which is the timing problem in miniature.
A hinge does not address any of that. It is a different axis of competition, chosen by a company that is demonstrably better at it.
The lineup has quietly gone all-premium
Look at what is missing from next week rather than what is in it. There is no standard iPhone 18 this autumn, with the more affordable models widely expected in spring 2027, so the September lineup is Pro, Pro Max and a foldable.
That is a structural change to how the iPhone is sold, not a scheduling quirk. The flagship moment now contains only the expensive tier, and the volume products get their own window six months later.
The foldable is reported as a book-fold design with a roughly 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch cover screen, on Apple’s A20 Pro silicon built on a 2nm process. Apple has confirmed none of these specifications.
Late, into a category someone else built
Apple arrives at foldables seven years after the first Galaxy Fold. Samsung shipped the Z Fold8 Ultra in July with an eight-inch display at just over four millimetres unfolded, plus a titanium-based approach to reducing crease visibility.
Being late has historically been fine for Apple, which did not invent the MP3 player, the smartphone or the smartwatch either. The pattern is to arrive once the engineering problems are tractable and the category has an obvious shape.
The open question is whether the crease, the weight and the price land somewhere the mainstream accepts. Foldables have remained a premium niche for the entire time Samsung has been iterating on them.
The case against this reading
There is a fair rebuttal, and it is worth stating. Hardware is where Apple’s advantage is most defensible, silicon included, and building differentiated devices while licensing a frontier model for the assistant is a rational division of labour rather than a retreat.
Apple’s own model work is also more substantial than the Siri narrative suggests. Its third-generation foundation models are a real programme, and on-device inference is a genuine strategic position rather than a consolation prize.
The counter to the counter is simply about attention. A company can only make so many bets at once, and the ones being announced next week are shaped like objects.
What Ternus is actually being measured on
A first event is a weak signal, because next week’s products were finished long before he took the job. Every device on that stage was specified under Cook.
The real test is the 2027 slate, where his own decisions start landing. Apple has been testing four frame designs for AI smart glasses ahead of a 2027 launch, which is the category where hardware and AI stop being separable.
Glasses are the case that would prove the strategy. A wearable display is useless without an assistant worth talking to, so the hardware bet and the software gap meet in the same product.
What to watch on the day
Beyond the foldable, an Apple Watch Series 12 and a fourth-generation Watch Ultra are expected, with AirPods 5 possible. Apple has not confirmed the roster.
The more telling detail will be how much stage time Siri gets, and whether Apple names the model underneath it. A company confident in its AI position mentions it early.
Ternus inherits the most profitable hardware business in the world and a credible plan to renew it. Whether renewal of the objects is the same thing as renewal of the company is the question the next two years answer.
